Bike Maintenance Basics Every Cyclist Should Know

Before every ride, do the ABC Quick Check. A is for Air — squeeze your tires to make sure they are properly inflated. Use a tire gauge for accuracy. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, make steering sluggish, and are more prone to punctures. Overinflated tires give a harsh ride and reduce grip.

B is for Brakes — squeeze each brake lever and make sure the wheel stops spinning completely. Check that the brake pads are not worn down to the metal and that they contact the rim or disc evenly. Brakes are your most important safety feature, so never ride with dodgy brakes.

C is for Chain — look at your chain and make sure it is not dry, rusty, or covered in grime. A clean, lubricated chain shifts smoothly and lasts much longer. Give the pedals a spin and listen for any grinding or clicking sounds that could indicate a problem.

Quick means quick releases — check that your wheels and seat post quick releases are tight. A loose wheel is extremely dangerous. Give each wheel a tug to make sure it is properly seated in the dropouts.

Your chain is the hardest-working component on your bike. It transfers all your pedaling power to the rear wheel, and it does this while exposed to dirt, rain, and road grime. A dirty chain wears out faster and degrades your cassette and chainrings along with it — an expensive replacement.

Clean your chain every 200-300 km or after any wet ride. Use a chain cleaning tool with degreaser — these attach directly to your chain and scrub all four sides simultaneously. Choose your lube based on conditions: wet lube for rainy weather (stays on longer but attracts dirt) or dry lube for fair weather (keeps the chain cleaner but washes off in rain). Never use WD-40 as chain lube — it is a solvent, not a lubricant, and will actually strip your chain of protection.

Flat tires are the most common mechanical issue for cyclists. Prevention is better than cure. Check your tire pressure before every ride using a gauge — the correct pressure range is printed on the tire sidewall. For road bikes, this is typically 80-130 PSI. For mountain bikes, 30-50 PSI. For hybrid or commuter bikes, 50-70 PSI.

Inspect your tires regularly for cuts, embedded debris, and worn tread. Remove any small stones or glass fragments lodged in the tire before they work their way through to the inner tube. Replace tires when the tread is worn smooth or you can see the casing fabric underneath.

Properly adjusted brakes are non-negotiable for safe riding. For rim brakes, the pads should contact the rim squarely and not touch the tire. If the pads are rubbing the rim when the brake is released, you need to adjust cable tension using the barrel adjuster on the brake lever — turn it counterclockwise to add more clearance.

For disc brakes, listen for rubbing sounds when riding. If the rotor is rubbing the pads, you may need to realign the caliper. Loosen the caliper mounting bolts, squeeze the brake lever firmly, then retighten the bolts while the lever is held. This centers the caliper over the rotor.
